ASO (App Store Optimisation) I Social Media and ASO: The Two Essentials of App Marketing

ASO (App Store Optimisation) refers to the techniques app marketers use to ensure that potential users are able to find their app on whatever app distribution platform they've chosen. The desired result of ASO is more traffic and, in turn, more downloads.

To do this, you need to understand the most important aspects of ASO. These are:

Social Media

Social media is one of the most cost-effective marketing tools around. Done well, even the most budget-poor marketing team can generate significant interest and exposure using social platforms.

The viral loop consists of four stages: seeing, installing, desire to share, and sharing.

The larger the amount of users that go through this process, the more downloads your app will receive.

What is ASO?

It is just like Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) which is for websites, only app store optimisation is for mobile apps. The function of optimisation is to improve the visibility of a mobile app in an app store such as App Store for iOS, Google Play for Android, Windows Store for Windows Phone or BlackBerry World for BlackBerry.

Why is ASO Important?

We know what optimisation is but why is it important? Besides the fact that apps are big business, but users are actually happy searching for apps. 50% of daily active users search for apps at least once a week. Studies have shown that 63% of apps are discovered through app store searches, that is over half! If that doesn't convince you to give it some consideration then this next stat will.

What is App Store Optimization (ASO)?

App store optimization is the process of optimizing mobile apps to rank higher in an app store’s search results. The higher your app ranks in an app store’s search results, the more visible it is to potential customers.

How to Help Your App Rank: The Basics of ASO

Much of what I’m about to explain is going to be SEO basics.

If you’re already familiar with these for web searches, there are still a few key differences within the App Store.

Let’s start by breaking down the various components that can affect your ASO:

Main ASO Factors:

  • Title: The keyword placed in the title should be the one with the heaviest search traffic. Spend time researching which keyword that is, because changing your title too often can be detrimental. As your app begins to rank higher and gain more reviews, your app’s news will begin to spread by word of mouth. Changing the title can make it difficult for word to spread about your app.
  • Keywords: To improve your search rankings, you need to know which keywords are relevant and used most often by your target audience. It is helpful to monitor competitors to realize how you compare week to week.

Besides being the most important ASO factor, the title and keywords can be modified easily to optimize them regularly.

Secondary ASO Factors:

  • Total # of Downloads: Your number of downloads are significant to ASO, but you don’t have complete control over them.
  • Ratings and Reviews: Also important and difficult to control. However, there are ways to incentivize happy users to rate and review.

ASO techniques

Again, a bit like, SEO, App Store Optimisation is preoccupied with search results and top chart rankings; the former being the most powerful, and encourages downloads.

The techniques associated with ASO can be broken down into 2 key areas:

  • Keyword optimisation: focusing on the relevancy, search volume, and difficulty of keywords used to search for specific apps. For example, if you have created an app for people needing to compare prices on painters & decorators in the south west, you may wish to rank for something like - painters decorators comparison Bristol.

  • Asset optimisation: slightly trickier to master, this focuses on the assets associated with the marketing of your app; the icon, screenshots, reviews, and any preview videos you’ve created - anything that gives potential downloaders an idea of how your app will look and feel, and what it will achieve for them.

What is the difference between ASO and SEO?

ASO is often referred to as app store SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Both processes share similarities like keyword optimization, backlinking and conversion optimization. The main differences between App Store Optimization and Search Engine Optimization are the ranking factors. Also, ASO is utilized for mobile apps whereas SEO is for websites.

SEO factors for a web browser, like Google Search, involves more than 200 aspects and the list keeps expanding. The list of ranking factors for ASO is much shorter, however many people are still unsure of which ones play a role. It’s time to put an end to that!

The following checklist illustrates the main differences and similarities between ASO & SEO.

6 Easy Steps to Get Your Google Ads Ready for 2020 1. Come up with a list of KPIs (if you don’t have one already) Your Google Ads key performance indicators, or KPIs, are the metrics that you use to determine how successful you consider your Google Ads to be. Every business has different KPIs depending on what they’re looking to gain from Google Ads. For example, if your main goal is to get traffic to your website, some of your KPIs would likely include clicks and click-through-rate (CTR). Or, if your priority is content downloads, some KPIs would include conversions, conversion rate, and cost per conversion (AKA cost per action, or CPA). 2. Identify KPIs that are low performing If your CTR is low, you’ll want to work on your ad copy If everything looks pretty good in your account but your CTR is super low, it’s most likely because your ad copy is not resonating with your audience.
